July 4th Dinghy Poker Run

The La Playa anchorage is a festive place to spend the 4th of July weekend and The Dinghy Doctor added a fun event to the basin in 2020. A handful of the local brokers and charter companies sponsored a six stop dinghy poker run that started just off Kellogg Beach and wrapped up with a dinghy raft up in the anchorage. Iā€™d say this is likely to become an annual event so consider this a fun activity to add to your weekend events if you pick La Playa as your 4th of July headquarters.

In 2020, the Port of San Diego opened up the anchorage on Thursday morning at 8am and boats were allowed to stay until Monday at 9am. The usual weekend anchoring permit was not required. The anchorage started to fill up pretty early on Thursday, but boats were able to squeeze in throughout the weekend. We stayed from Thursday morning through Sunday night on our boat. We were anchored on the channel end of the anchorage and it was mostly mellow in the evenings with one boat that provided music for everyone. Fortunately they played a generally patriotic mix of music and cut it off around 10pm. The port also extends the anchorage with large yellow buoys borrowed from San Diego Yacht Club and West Marine.
